The coast guard keeps an eye on the sea

Coast guard

The governor of West-Flanders province

The governor of West Flanders chairs the Coast Guard Consultative Body and chairs the Coast Guard Centre Steering Committee.

He is also responsible for drawing up the provincial emergency and intervention plans and organising disaster drills.

The governor is also the coordinator of the general North Sea emergency and intervention plan. This includes the following tasks:

1° drafting, updating and reviewing essential elements of the North Sea General Emergency and Intervention Plan;

2° coordination in the event of a disaster in accordance with the North Sea General Emergency and Intervention Plan.

The General North Sea Emergency and Intervention Plan regulates all multidisciplinary aspects associated with disasters involving the sea, which fall within the competences of the coast guard partners. All coastguard partners with powers at sea are involved in the creation of the North Sea GEIP.

As general coordinator of the ‘GEIP North Sea’, the governor will be responsible for the coordination of emergency assistance, crisis communication and aftercare during an emergency on the North Sea. He works closely with all competent coast guard partners in this regard.
